Gibney Celebrates Juneteenth
Overview
This Saturday is Juneteenth, a day celebrating the end of slavery in America. It commemorates June 19, 1865 when Union troops led by Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas two months after the end of the Civil War and let the enslaved people of Texas know that they had been freed. Even though the war was over in April 1865 and the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued two years prior, it was not until the arrival of Union troops in Galveston that the enslaved people of Texas learned of their freedom.
